Africa Data Centres, LINX partner for African digital growth

Africa Data Centres (ADC) has formed a strategic partnership with The London Internet Exchange (LINX) to explore opportunities in current and new markets across Africa.

The groups say the goal is to add value to local network communities, LINX membership and data center facilities across Africa.

ADC is a business of Cassava Technologies group, and has ambitious expansion plans for its business in Africa including investing US$500 million into many new hyperscale data centers across the continent.

ADC believes that data centers are the foundation of economic growth on the continent and without them, sustainable and self-sufficient ICT ecosystems cannot be developed.

"Building new facilities is the one path that Africa can take to address the growing need for storage and networking that are crucial to digitizing Africa and bringing digital services to its citizens," said Tesh Durvasula, CEO of Africa Data Centres in a statement.

ADC has a network of interconnected, carrier- and cloud-neutral data center facilities and currently services nine facilities in six countries.

"This new partnership is the recipe for great things to enhance connectivity and digital services in new and emerging markets across Africa," added Durvasula.

LINX delivers redundant and resilient interconnection solutions at their global Internet Exchange Points (IXPs).

"We are excited to be working with Africa Data Centres on this journey into new markets across Africa," said Nurani Nimpuno, head of global engagement at LINX.

Nimpuno said ADC's hub of interconnected facilities on the continent make it the "ideal partner to serve the growth and demand predicted in the ICT sector" and open up opportunities to make digital services a reality for hundreds of millions of citizens in Africa.

African growth aspirations

Earlier in May 2023, ADC announced it will soon start construction on a new data center in Accra, Ghana. The new facility has been designed for an initial 10MW, which can expand to 30MW depending on demand and is expected to be the largest data center facility in West Africa to date, outside of Nigeria.

In April 2023, Cassava Technologies pledged a 4.5 billion South African rand (US$249 million at the time) investment in South Africa through its business units – Liquid Intelligent Technologies, Africa Data Centres and Distributed Power Africa.

In January 2023, ADC broke ground on new facilities in Nairobi, Kenya and Cape Town, South Africa, and also announced a partnership with INX-ZA to offer remote peering in South Africa.

This followed recent expansions in South Africa and Ghana as the group continues its African expansion with data center builds expected in Africa's largest cities including Abidjan, Accra, Lagos, Cairo and Casablanca
