Will Standard Bank Add to South Africa's MVNO Mix?

Article Image
Standard Bank might be the next company to launch a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) business in South Africa, according to a report from Tech Central.

The report notes that former Virgin Mobile South Africa CEO Steve Bailey has joined the company's executive team and that the move runs counter to the Bank's previous strategy.

If Standard Bank, which has around 12 million retail customers for its financial services in South Africa, decides to enter the mobile services market, it will be joining a long list of existing MVNOs -- there are already more than 10 in the market -- and, of course, competing with the infrastructure-based mobile operators Vodacom, MTN, Cell C and Telkom.

Bailey, though, would provide them with a wealth of knowledge and experience of how to run the operation efficiently and with the least possible risk.

So should Standard Bank enter the fray? Let us know what you think on the message board below.
