Retaining influence and 'control'
As the digital entertainment market grows in key AFrican markets, to what extent will local/regional players be able to dominate the market and withstand the likely interst that large global players will have in key markets?

Can African companies dominate the digital entertainmnet market in Africa in the medium/long term?

That is interesting that music companies are partnering with telcos to distribute music versus going over the top. Has this always been the route they've taken in Africa? Any insight as to what those deals look like?

@Telecoms Ray - I think it will be a combination, and likely move in waves. Nigeria and South Africa are quite advanced in terms of local production and some early trailblazers like iROKO have figured out localized models that could work. Africa offers huge challenges for the content industry, with comparatively low discretionary income and high piracy. But freemium/ad-sponsored type models could really take off, as there is interest and desire for entertainment. To run a robust ad-sopnsored service though, you would need a corporate sector willing and able to sponsor it. The advantage of digital entertianment is that even smaller businesses can run advertising, which aggregated, could create a viable model.
