Digital Inclusion is Key for Africa's Development — Interview With Dudu Mkhwanazi
At this year's AfricaCom, much of the debate has revolved around how best to bridge the 'digital divide.' Most African nations still display a stark contrast in the number of people with access to ICT between rural and urban, and rich and poor, communities.
One of the organisations attempting to bridge that divide and which has participated in the Cape Town event is Project Isizwe, a South African non-profit that advocates, and enables, free Internet access within a walking distance in low-income communities.
We spoke with CEO Dudu Mkhwanazi about the organisation's achievements so far, which include facilitating the deployment of the largest free public free Wi-Fi network in Africa in the Tshwane Municipality, Gauteng, South Africa. Mkhwanazi also discussed the pressing need for digital inclusion and the representation of women in the ICT industry. As a young, female leader in the African telecoms space, she emphasised the need to nurture more women in the industry.
