CMC Networks Uses Kontron Tech to Support SDN, NFV Rollout

Article Image
PRESS RELEASE -- Kontron, a global provider of cloud and carrier-class integrated infrastructure platforms, today announced that CMC Networks, a preeminent global communications services Carrier in Africa, the Middle East, and Europe, has selected Kontron as its preferred commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware infrastructure supplier to support its short- and long-term plans to roll-out SDN- and NFV-based network services.

This digital evolution enables CMC Networks to deliver a new generation of services and applications for wholesale operators and their end clients across multiple regions. The strategy is to work with multiple solution partners to arrive at best-of-breed solutions for rapid service roll-outs. The first milestone is to deploy an SD-WAN powered hybrid cloud solution based on its partner, 128 Technology, which would combine its Session Smart Networking Platform with Kontron platforms at the network core and edge.

“Kontron has demonstrated a profound dedication to building unique SYMKLOUD whitebox hardware designs that ensure solutions based on hardware and software disaggregation becomes a reality,” said Geoff Dornan, Chief Technical Officer, CMC Networks. “Together, we are looking at any number of deployment strategies, from the core and cloud-ready POPs down to the far network edge.”

Using SDN and NFV technologies has typically required upgrades to core network elements. However, with the advent of 5G and new high-bandwidth heavy services, more virtualized network functions are being moved closer to the edge, away from data centers and central offices. These include vRAN, vEPC, and vCDN for mobile operators, and where needed, offer services that center around vMPLS, SECaaS, and MEF-compliant Carrier Ethernet services.

“CMC is part of a new breed of progressive operators tackling the digital transformation challenge in order to derive true service agility based on versatile infrastructure,” said Luc-Yves Pagal Vinette, Global Business Development Executive for SDN/NFV solutions, Kontron, Communications Business. “We are excited to work with CMC Networks and to provide core-to-edge high-density and low-opex ‘Open Service’ platforms across their expansive network of 104 global points of presence (POPs).”

The scope of what Kontron offers goes beyond the designing of hardware. It has completed extensive continuous integration and development of OpenStack (Queens) for VMs and Bare Metal (Ironic) and Kubernetes (v1.11)/Docker for fully integrated cloud provisioning solutions. Kontron offers set recipes based on a Canonical distribution of each. Kontron is active in the OpenStack edge computing community helping to formulate hardware and open source requirements for various edge-related use cases.
